Recently in Washington, DC, nearly 500 advocates from across the country gathered in the nation’s capital for Habitat on the Hill 2026: Our Voices Open Doors, a powerful three-day legislative conference hosted by Habitat for Humanity International. Marking both Habitat’s 50th anniversary and the 20th year of Habitat on the Hill, this milestone event united voices committed to advancing affordable housing solutions nationwide.
A highlight of the conference was the morning plenary fireside chat, where bipartisan momentum on Capitol Hill took center stage. Moderated by Jessica Anderson, the discussion brought together key housing policy leaders and congressional staff to explore opportunities for collaboration across party lines.
Panelists included Alex Ndikum, representing the office of Emanuel Cleaver; Madeleine Marr; and Jared Sutton. Together, they shared insights into the current legislative landscape and emphasized the importance of cross-sector partnerships to address the nation’s housing challenges.
The conversation underscored a shared commitment—across political lines—to increasing access to safe, decent, and affordable housing. Panelists highlighted ongoing efforts within the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee and in the House of Representatives, noting that meaningful progress depends on sustained advocacy and community engagement.
Throughout the conference, participants engaged in intensive training sessions, policy discussions, and networking opportunities designed to strengthen their advocacy skills. The energy culminated in more than 300 meetings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, where advocates shared personal stories and urged action on policies that support affordable homeownership and housing stability.
For Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland and its partners, events like Habitat on the Hill are critical to amplifying local impact on a national stage. By connecting grassroots voices with policymakers, Habitat continues to open doors—not just to homes, but to opportunity, equity, and lasting change.
As the need for affordable housing continues to grow, the momentum built during Habitat on the Hill 2026 serves as a reminder: when advocates come together with a shared purpose, real progress is possible.
